Appliance Star Rating Labels Explained
Many of us have seen star ratings on appliances and many of us generally know “the more stars the better”, but what many of us don’t know is why appliances have star ratings and what this all means for you, so let us explain.
The Energy Star Rating System was introduced in 1986 and is mandatory for dishwashers, computer monitors, washing machines, TV’s, dryers, fridges, freezers and single phase air conditioners. The rating of each appliance is measured under Australian Standards and test procedures measuring “energy consumption” and “energy
performance criteria”. Appliances must meet these criteria before they can be given an energy rating label. The Label features a star rating between one and ten stars, the more stars, the higher the efficiency.
The Energy Rating Labels were introduced to allow consumers to easily understand how much a particular
model will cost to run at home and also how energy efficient it is in comparison to other models. Sometimes high star-rated models can cost more to buy, but choosing a less expensive product with fewer stars could cost you more over time when you include the running costs.
The Energy Rating Label has two main features:
- The stars provide a comparison of the appliance’s energy efficiency. The more stars, the cheaper the product is to run.
- This bottom figure provides an estimate of the yearly energy consumption (Kilowatt hours/year) based on “average usage”. The lower the number, the more savings for you.
In the past, the energy efficiency of a new appliance may not have been your most important buying consideration, but with electricity prices increasing, it should definitely be considered. When buying an appliance we usually focus on price, features, brand and size, which are of course important, but using the energy rating label to help your decision, will improve your long term savings.
Although a high star rating is beneficial when purchasing a product, it is important to use your appliances efficiently and follow the manufacturers directions to reduce your bills.
